What is Solar PV?

Solar panel electricity systems, also known as solar photovoltaics (PV), capture the sun's energy using photovoltaic cells. These cells don't need direct sunlight to work and they can still generate electricity on a cloudy day. The cells convert the sunlight into electricity via something called an inverter (usually found in your garage, or loft), which can be used to run household appliances and lighting.

The Governments Feed-in-Tariff pays you for generating electricity, and you can even sell what energy you don't use back to the grid. When your solar panels aren't fully active, for example, at night, you simply draw your electricity as normal.

Benefits of Solar PV

By installing Solar PV you will see multiple benefits such as cheaper bills, you will be able to generate an income from the feed-in-tariff (even if you use all of the electricity which you generate) and you will be able to reduce your carbon footprint.

Cheaper Installs

Thanks to advances in technology, and greater demand for Solar PV, the price of the kit has come down dramatically (around 50% less!). This means you could get a 4kw system from as little as £3,950 installed in to your home.

Low Maintenance

Solar PV sytems are relatively maintenance free. The panels themselves will last for very long periods of time, you should expect to have a new inverter installed after 10 years or so, however this is not a requirement.

What is Solar Thermal?

Solar water heating systems, or solar thermal systems use free heat from the sun to warm domestic hot water. A conventional boiler or immersion heater can be used to make the water hotter, or to provide hot water when solar energy is unavailable. The warm/pre-heated water can then be stored in a separate hot water cylinder which is usually found in your loft.

The recently launched domestic RHI enables home owners who have installed green technologies in to their homes claim payments from the government for investing in renewable forms of energy generation. Solar thermal installs can claim the RHI, Solar PV systems can claim the FIT.

Boiler Pipework

Works all Year

Solar thermal systems work all year round, though you'll need to heat the water further with a boiler or immersion heater during the winter months. On a hot day, you should be able to maintain very high temperatures in your tank.

Reduces Your Bills

Solar thermal systems pre-heat the water prior to it entering your main heating system. This means you use less energy to get it hot, which in turn reduces your energy bills significantly. You will also reduce your homes carbon footprint.

Claim the RHI

The domestic Renewable Heat Incentive is a Government scheme wich has been set up to reward those who install green technologies. A typical household could get payments of £300+ per year by installing a Solar Thermal system.
